A Year to Remember!

Greetings Fellow Tigers,

Here we are on September 30, the last day of the Kiwanis year.  And what a year it has been, with a global pandemic, racial tensions, shaky economies, and extreme weather conditions.

And still, you, the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis members, continue with your strong leadership. We currently have 73 awesome members, an increase of 25 for this year. Our growth as a club enables us to develop, encourage, and support each other in the culture of growth. And we are still growing, thanks to you!

According to the Kiwanis International 2019-20 Membership Matrix, 56 clubs have been completed in the Americas and 147 clubs globally. The new club opening forms indicate that members of the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis opened 25 of those 56 clubs in the Americas and 26 of 147 clubs globally, and more will probably be reported in the next few days. Thank you for growing Kiwanis!

It has been my great honor to serve as president of the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis this year and to have the opportunity to serve with you.  As part of my farewell message, I quote from the song “For Good” from the musical Wicked:

“I’ve heard it said/That people come into our lives/For a reason/Bringing something we must learn/And we are led to those/Who help us most to grow if we let them/And we help them in return….I know I’m who I am today/Because I knew you.”

And finally, if you did not get to see the video at the end of the meeting on September 24 (now a two-year tradition, thanks to Past President Gary Levine), here is the URL: https://youtu.be/zlKlVy9MSuY   Even if you did watch it, watch it again…and never give up.

Lead on with President Bob. Let’s grow!

Yours in Service,

President Barb

Staying Engaged!

As May slips into June, many traditional celebratory occasions occur…graduations, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day (the latter two of which are celebrated on the same calendar day in all of the countries in which our members live). For many of us, the celebration looked or will look different this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, we have been finding memorable ways to honor our mothers, fathers, and graduate

In the same way, many of our Kiwanis clubs are managing to stay in touch, conduct business, serve, and gain new members throughout the pandemic. I continue to be inspired by the leadership, creativity, and high-minded service of Kiwanians.

Consider, for example, the Oceanside, New York Kiwanis Club that connected restaurants that were losing money or closing with the need for meals for first responders. They invited the community to donate through social media, started with $27,000 in donations, and split the order among the restaurants. Now they schedule drop offs at different locations for 3 meals a day. It has become a community-wide project.

The same is true for the one-year-old Greater Riverton Area, IL, Kiwanis Club. Soon after organizing, they started a blessing box that their inherited Key Club stocked as needed. It morphed into a food source for those in the community who became unemployed. The club now receives donations of $2500-$3000 a week, in addition to donations of food, to stock the box up to 11 times daily and to supply a drive-through food pantry at the business of one of the club members.

Likewise, the Greater Portmore Kiwanis Club on the southern coast of Jamaica developed a #WECARE plan. They have provided hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies for first responders, food for elderly residents and those who are quarantined, and barrels of water for hand-washing stations at hospitals and police stations.

Then there is the Orillia Kiwanis Club in Ontario, Canada, sponsor of a 61-year-old music festival and competition for grants, scholarships, and trophies. When the live performance was cancelled, the club quickly adapted to virtual performances with remote judging to give students access to college opportunities and professional exposure.

Now more than ever, the world needs Kiwanis. Now more than ever, Kiwanis needs the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis Club. Think of what the members of this club do on a daily basis, from giving away over 35,000 books to underserved children to opening a new club entirely through virtual interactions. Thank you for your leadership.

We need your leadership both now and after we come out into a “new normal.” We need your leadership to continue gaining new members and new clubs. We need your leadership in engaging and retaining those members and clubs. We need your leadership at every level of the organization to keep Kiwanis healthy.

Lead on!

Sincerely,

Barb Thompson

Our Mission!

Greetings, Fellow Tigers,

We are almost to September, the last month of the Kiwanis year.  And what a year it has been, with a global pandemic, racial tensions, shaky economies, and extreme weather conditions.

Still, you, the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis members, continue with your strong leadership. We currently have 73 awesome members, an increase of 25 for this year. We are #2 out of 452 clubs in the California-Nevada-Hawaii in the number of members added. Our growth enables us to develop, encourage, and support each other in the culture of growth. And we are still growing, thanks to you!

The number of new club openings is a moving and increasing total, again thanks to you, as you find creative ways to open clubs in this unpredictable time.  According to the Kiwanis International 2019-20 Membership Metrics (current as of July 30), 41 clubs have been completed in the Americas and 109 clubs globally. The new club opening forms indicate that members of the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis opened 24 of those 41 clubs in the Americas and 25 of 109 clubs globally. Thank you for growing Kiwanis!

As of today, we have 32 more days in the 2019-2020 Kiwanis year. So, there is still time to make calls, send texts and messages, respond to every social media “like” of Kiwanis, meet in person or virtually, and add more members and clubs to serve children. In the words of Winston Churchill, “This is no time for ease and comfort. It is time to dare and endure.” In the words of Gandhi, “The future depends on what you do today.” And as our own Allen Yergovich says, “It’s time to get quacking.”

Lead on. Let’s grow!

Celebrate Together!

Greetings Fellow Tigers,

As you all know, one hundred years ago, at the 1919 Kiwanis International Convention in Birmingham, Alabama, USA, Kiwanians purchased the organization from founder and organizer Allen S. Browne. That purchase led to a need for a new constitution and underlying principles or “objects.”

More than 800 pages of suggestions for the new constitution were submitted and considered. Included in those 800 pages were six suggestions for the objects submitted by New York Governor Lew Mitchell.  Kiwanis members approved those six statements, with minor changes, at the 1924 Kiwanis International Convention in Denver, Colorado.

The six objects have remained unchanged since being approved in 1924. In 1974, Kiwanis Magazine editor David Williams wrote, “Today they remain an inspiration and a beacon for any of us who choose to rediscover them.”

So, we can look to the past to help us lead in the present. We face a global pandemic, the effects of racism, shaky economies, and many other serious problems. Fortunately, the following Objects of Kiwanis still provide an inspiration and beacon for our work as Kiwanians.

  • To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
  • To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
  • To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards.
  • To develop by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship.
  • To provide through Kiwanis clubs a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities.
  • To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Thank you for being a Kiwanian and a member of the Eye of the Tiger eKiwanis. Thank you for stepping up to serve the children of the world and to address the problems that we face. Thank you for upholding the Objects of Kiwanis and for continuing to add clubs and members to maintain those objects.

Lead on.

Sincerely,

President Barb Thompson

A Spring of Hope!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times….it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” These famous words from Charles Dickens’ opening paragraph of A Tale of Two Cities were written in 1859 about conditions in 1775. The first sentence from The Kiwanis Legacy, © 2004, reads “At the beginning of the 20th century, well sir, the world turned flat crazy.”

So, here we are in 2020, experiencing a global pandemic, and those sentences from the past describe our world. Fortunately, ever since 1915, we have had Kiwanis and good-hearted Kiwanians to step forward to provide the “season of Light” and “spring of hope” that Dickens named.

Members of the Eye of the Tiger (EOT) eKiwanis continue to lead in improving the lives of others. Through our new partnership with The Literacy Club, EOT eKiwanians have provided over 1000 books to unlock the power of reading for children during this time.

Our EOT eKiwanians are involved in many other projects, such as making cloth face masks and delivering much-needed food to those who are hungry.

Our e-club model has proven helpful in inspiring face-to-face Kiwanis clubs and foundations to pivot to virtual meetings. And while social distancing and organizational shutdowns make in-person visits difficult, EOT eKiwanis members are organizing an e-club and finishing requirements for other clubs. Finally, many EOT eKiwanians are actively preparing for club openings (including our planned locations in Indianapolis) to begin when our physical locations open up again.

Since 1915, Kiwanis has survived and served through two world wars, a major economic depression, and at least four other global pandemics. Thank you for your leadership, hard work, and generosity in meeting our current challenges and in ensuring a healthy future for Kiwanis. You bring the best of times.

Onward!

Sincerely,

Barb Thompson
